CAB Volunteers

bullet  The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) values volunteers highly.

  Ninety percent of people in the CAB Service are volunteers.

CAB volunteers

bullet  Voluntary work for a CAB can include:

bullet helping with office administration;

bullet giving advice to clients;

bullet serving on a CAB management committee, aiding recruitment, developing new policy, assisting publicity or fundraising campaigns.

( Fares travelling to the CAB are paid so that volunteers are not out of pocket.)

bullet  Voluntary work for a CAB gives good experience for paid employment both in the CAB Service and elsewhere.

bullet  The CAB cares about what kind of people its volunteers are, not what they know before they start. So :

bullet Are you a good listener?

bullet Are you willing to learn and enjoy helping others?

bullet Do you support equal opportunities?

bullet Can you commit yourself to a number of hours each week?

If you answer 'Yes' to all these questions you could become a CAB volunteer.

Young People at the CAB

What We Do Here's The Deal

We answer 6 million questions every year, many from young people, on issues like employment rights, student funding, racial abuse, contraception and housing. We're volunteers who are dedicated to getting you answers when you really need them, and getting things changed when the law is wrong. Its 100% confidential and 100% free.

Join the Team

We need your advice too. Young people are vital to our team and can really make a difference. It doesn't matter how much time you can spare, or what skills you have, our young advisers need to be as diverse as those who come in for help.

What's in it for you?

It's a springboard for your future. CABx are busy with all kinds of people, so your communications skills and confidence will get a real boost. It will make your CV stand out from the crowd, and we will also write a reference when you leave. You'll get 100% support and full training, as well as your expenses paid, so you're never out of pocket.

What you can do

Lots of things. You could train to be an adviser, helping other young people with problems such as housing, equality or education. Maybe you're into computers, or could design posters and leaflets. Come help organise campaigns about issues you really care about. If you are really brave you could help streamline your CAB office and learn some real office skills. You'll be part of the team. You will gain, and so will we!

We need your energy, ideas, skills and of course, some of your time. It's up to you. We don't ask for any specific skills, because we'll train you. How many hours? That's also up to you; all we ask is for a positive commitment, no matter how small. Ask at your local CAB for details.
