Easy Access
The 'Easy Access' versions of this site are intended for the visually impaired and for anyone who wishes to access the site without any graphics. It is available either as black text on a white background or white text on a black background.

The site can be navigated either from the Contents page or from the navigation bar that appears at the top of each page.

Access Keys

Access keys are available on the Easy Access pages of this site. Depending on which browser you use the Access keys can be activated as follows:

Internet Explorer 4 - Depress the 'ALT' key and appropriate access key (as detailed below) together.
Internet Explorer 5 or 6 - Depress the 'ALT' key and appropriate access key (as detailed below) together, and then 'Enter'.
Netscape 6 or later or Mozilla - Depress the 'ALT' key and appropriate access key (as detailed below) together.
Mackintosh based systems - Depress the 'CTRL' key and appropriate access key (as detailed below) together.

The allocation of the Access keys is in line with Government standards. The keys have been allocated as follows:

Web Content Accessibility

Surfing the Web
The website of the Royal National Institute of the Blind contains a lot of information and help for blind and partially sighted people who want to surf the web.

It contains details about (and links for downloading) specialist web browsers and speech output for 'reading' web pages. It also gives information about how to navigate web pages without using a mouse.

If you are using Windows XP, a voice package (Narrator) is available by going to 'Start', 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'Accessibility'. Windows 98 offers some help with accessibility (but not the Narrator package) by going through the same steps outlined above.

Customizing Your Computer
Internet Explorer

General information about accessibility and how to change your browser settings for Internet Explorer is provided in the Internet Explorer Help file.

On the menu bar at the top of the page in Internet Explorer go to 'Help', then to 'Contents and Index'. Customizing Your Browser and Accessibility are two of the topics offered under 'Contents'.

Amongst other things you will find information about changing web page fonts, text size and backgrounds, and how to turn off graphics. Under accessibility you will also find details of Internet Explorer keyboard shortcuts plus general information for people with disabilities.

Information is also available under the heading 'Index' relating to Customizing Internet Explorer, Customizing web-page display and Accessibility.

Netscape

For help with accessibility when using Netscape, go to 'Help' on the menu bar at the top of the screen. Under 'Help Contents', select 'Browsing the Web', then scroll a little way down the screen until you find 'Customizing Your Browser'. Amongst the topics covered you will find information on changing fonts and changing backgrounds or colours.
